14 week Checkup

This picture has nothing to do with this blog.....it was one taken at Jason's work Christmas party and I had never posted it. Just wanted everyone to get to see us all dressed up with somewhere to go!

Jason and I went in for my 14 week check up on Thursday. We were able to hear the heartbeat for the first time which is always a very emotional moment for me. It was at a strong 179, which still indicates a girl if you believe in that myth....I am trying hard not to. 179 was also Caraline's heartbeat at 14 weeks, so who knows. Everything went well and I go back at the end of February. I won't be far enough along at that point to find out the sex of the baby, so they scheduled me an ultrasound the following week! I can hardly wait!! I feel like it's waiting for Christmas all over again! Caraline went with us but wasn't at all interested in listening to the heartbeat....she was more interested in what was inside all of the cabinets in Dr. Dunn's office. Jason had fun holding her down while I was on the table :)

I finally broke the news to my students on Friday since all went well at my appointment on Thursday. I was actually nervous about telling them because I wasn't sure how they would react. I began by reading them the book , My Teacher's having a baby, written by Eve Bunting. After I finished reading the book I asked them why they thought I chose that book to read to them. I got some funny responses. One student said, "Because Mrs. Bates is having a baby." I said well, yes, she is but that isn't why I read you this book. Then another student says, "Because we are going to study babies next in Science!" I normally would have been proud of that response, however, that wasn't what I was looking for. After a few minutes of no one getting it right....I finally had one girl say, "Are you having a baby Mrs. Miles?" I smiled really big and said YES! I looked at all my students in front of me on the reading carpet and their faces were expressionless.....nothing! They could have cared less. I gave them a minute and let the news soak in and then I bravely asked, "Does anyone have any questions?" Two hands popped up. One wanted to know if I would be missing any school. I assured them the baby was coming in the summer and that I would not be missing any school. The other student asked, "How do you know for sure you are having a baby?" I wasn't sure how to answer that so I told her that I took a test and I found out for sure. That only led to more confusion.....TEST? They couldn't believe that me, their teacher had to take a test. I quickly stated that it was one that I bought at the store and with that I ended the question/answer session. Before I could say anything else, one student blurts out, "Can we get back to studying presidents now?" I laughed in my head and thought how funny kids can be! These are the reasons why I teach everyday! Kids are so unpredictable and random at times!

That didn't quite go how I had imagined but with 3rd graders you never know what you're gonna get! I hope as I start showing and the time gets closer they will get a little more excited. I am sure they went home and questioned their parents over the "test" you take to have a baby. I will probably be getting some emails over that one....oh-well!
